DXF takeoff without AutoCAD
You can do a takeoff from a DXF file without AutoCAD in pdf2takeoff: open an ASCII DXF in your browser and it becomes a vector drawing at a standard scale (1:50, 1:100 and so on) worked out from the file's own units, so you can measure straight away without calibrating. Blocks such as doors count exactly, text stays searchable, and the file never leaves your computer.
How to do a takeoff from a DXF
- Get an ASCII DXF. Most CAD apps save ASCII DXF. A binary DXF or a DWG needs saving as ASCII DXF, or plotting to PDF, first.
- Open it in pdf2takeoff. Drop the DXF in. The model space is drawn like a plot and laid out at the smallest standard scale that fits an A3 sheet.
- Check the scale. The scale chip shows the ratio and from drawing units. Measuring one known dimension is a quick cross-check.
- Measure and count. Measure lengths and areas with no calibration step. Press S and click a block, such as a door, and Scan counts every insert of it.
- Export. Export to Excel or CSV, print the quantity report, or save the markups into a PDF that opens in Bluebeam Revu and Acrobat.
How does pdf2takeoff know the scale of a DXF?
A DXF stores real-world coordinates, and its $INSUNITS header says which unit they are in: millimetres, metres, inches, feet and others. pdf2takeoff converts the drawing to its real size, then lays it out at the smallest standard ratio that fits an A3 sheet, so a house usually comes out at 1:50 and a 30 m building at 1:100. The scale is stored with the page, so the printed ratio and the page agree and every measurement is in real units from the first click.
If the file does not state its units, pdf2takeoff estimates them from the drawing size (thousands of units across reads as millimetres, tens as metres), tells you it has done so and asks you to check a known dimension.
What comes across from the DXF?
- Line work: lines, polylines with their arcs, circles, arcs, ellipses and splines as true curves, filled solids and dimensions, drawn in black like a plot.
- Blocks: expanded through every insert, so a door or fitting defined once is the same geometry everywhere and Scan matches each one exactly.
- Text: TEXT and MTEXT become real text wrapped to its box, so it stays searchable and room names are read without OCR.
- Hatches: shown as tones beneath the line work (solid fills mid grey, patterns light), so a large fill never hides what is drawn over it.
- Left out: paper space, and frozen or switched-off layers.
What about DWG files?
DWG is a closed format that a browser cannot read. In your CAD app, save or export the drawing as an ASCII DXF, or plot the sheet to PDF, and open that. If you open a DWG, pdf2takeoff tells you exactly this rather than guessing. A binary DXF gets the same advice: save it as ASCII.
DXF or PDF: which should I ask for?
Both work. A DXF arrives with its scale set and its blocks counted exactly, so it is the quicker route when the designer can send one. A PDF plotted from CAD is just as good once calibrated: on our ScaledDrawingBench, the engine answers 99.8% of questions correctly on PDFs exported from CAD.
FAQ
Do I need AutoCAD to measure a DXF?
No. pdf2takeoff opens ASCII DXF files in your browser for free, with no CAD software or licence.
Do I have to calibrate a DXF?
No, when the file states its units: the scale is set from $INSUNITS. When it does not, pdf2takeoff estimates the units from the drawing size and asks you to check one known dimension.
Can it open a binary DXF or a DWG?
Not directly. Save the drawing as an ASCII DXF, or plot it to PDF, from your CAD app and open that.
Can Scan count blocks in a DXF?
Yes. Blocks are expanded through their inserts, so every door or fitting is identical geometry and Scan matches each one exactly.
Can an AI agent open a DXF?
Yes. Through the MCP server, open_document accepts a DXF and reports its drawingScale, so the agent can measure without setting a scale.
Is my DXF uploaded?
No. The DXF is converted and measured in your browser on your own computer; nothing is sent anywhere.
